General Data Protection Regulation

Last updated: 25 Oct 2018.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is part of a collection of reforms made for citizens of the European Economic Area (EU), which includes the entire European Union plus a few more countries. It is designed to provide each person with greater control over their personal information.

For a general discussion of privacy, security, and use on our websites, see Privacy Policy.

Quality Nonsense Websites

This document applies to all Quality Nonsense websites, which include:

Overview

In the simplest terms, the GDPR means that we will abide by the highest standards in terms of keeping any privately disclosed data.

Quality Nonsense has been in business for over a decade, so it should go without saying that we will only use the information that we collect about you lawfully and in accordance with the EU GDPR.

When we ask you to provide information by which you can be identified when using our websites, you can be assured that it will only be used in accordance with our privacy policy.

To be clear, our privacy policy is the definitive document with regard to what we do with data, but this companion piece is intended to explain in plain English what we do and don’t do with data.

Our privacy policy will change from time to time. Please check back periodically for updates (you’ll see a “Last updated” date at the top).

How We Use Collected Data

We do not sell, rent, or share email addresses, or other personally identifiable information of our website visitors and we never will. We will only share personal information when required by law (eg, if subpoenaed to do so).

We only send you promotional email if you have explicitly opted-in.

We will only pass your data on to third parties if you have explicitly agreed that we do so, or if we are subcontracting something you might reasonably expect us to — like using Google Analytics.

The reason we collect information like email addresses is to provide you with information you explicitly ask for. For example, to send out user-requested newsletters.

We also use non-identifying and aggregate information to better design our website and to share with advertisers.

For example, we may tell an advertiser that X number of individuals visited a certain area on one of our websites. But we would not disclose anything that could be used to identify those individuals.

See our legal document, PRIVACY AND COOKIES POLICY, for the specific third parties that we share data with. None of it is unusual, and most of it consists of partners who provide services for us like hosting and ad presentation.

What Information We Do and Don’t Collect

We will never collect sensitive information about you without your explicit consent. By “sensitive information” we mean details like:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • Your phone number.

We do use cookies to collect non-sensitive information about your use of our sites. This is standard on almost all websites nowadays and allows us to understand how visitors use our sites: which pages are most popular, which bits don’t work, and so on.

Your IP Address

We use your IP address for many reasons, such as:

  • To gather traffic and user data using Google Analytics
  • To customize your user experience (eg, we show you pricing in your local currency).

External Links

Our websites contain links to other websites. We do not have any control over the content or behavior of external websites, so cannot be responsible for the protection and privacy of any information which you provide whilst visiting such sites. External sites are not governed by this privacy statement, so you should check their privacy policies.

Security

Just as we care about our own information security, we care about yours. We make every reasonable effort to keep your data safe.

Storage and Data Retention

Information provided when signing up for our newsletter is suppressed as soon as you unsubscribe. Other information is deleted when you request it.

The only data we keep indefinitely is publicly available data and technical data we’ve collected (such as analytics) — mostly non-personally identifiable information.

Cookies

A cookie is a small file that asks permission to be placed on your computer’s hard drive. Once you agree, the file is added and the cookie helps us do things like analyze web traffic or display your local currency to you.

Cookies allow web applications to respond to you as an individual. The web application can tailor its operations to your needs, likes, and dislikes by gathering and remembering information about your preferences.

Cookies may also be served to you via third-party advertisers. Note that this policy does not apply to them.

If you do not want cookies served to you, you can disable them by changing the settings on your browser.

We use cookies in the following ways:

  • Performance: these help you navigate and enhance your use of our websites, as well as helping to support graphic and video features.
  • Google Analytics: these help us to see how non-identifiable people use our sites so that we can make improvements. See Google Analytics for more information and how to opt out.
  • Other Analytics: similar to Google Analytics, you can learn more at Hotjar and VWO.
  • Advertising: we display ads using Google Adsense and Newor Media, both of which add cookies.

Note: you may change your account settings on your social networks to prevent both us and third parties seeing information in relation to you. Here are links to the privacy settings for the two most important sites people visit:
